How To Remove Stains From Carpet Using Household Products

No matter how protective you are of your carpet, stains are bound to happen. What do you do? Grab a paper towel and begin frantically rubbing the carpet? Not so fast – rubbing the stain will only spread it and cause it to set faster. For easy and complete removal of stains from your home's carpet, use the following 4-step method:

  1. Immediately, gently blot the stain with a dry towel. Rubbing the stain only spreads it and makes it more difficult to remove later on.
  2. Combine ¼ cup of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of Dawn dish soap, and warm water in a spray bottle. If you don't have these particular items, the white vinegar can be substituted with white wine, and the Dawn can be replaced by any other gentle, non-bleach detergent.
  3. Liberally spray the stain and let soak for 10 minutes. Your carpet should be soaked with the cleaning solution by the time you are done spraying.
  4. After letting the solution sit for 10 minutes, blot the stain with a dry towel until it is removed. If the towel becomes saturated with moisture, use a new one until the stain is completely gone.

This method works for most common household stains including coffee, kool-aid, and pet accidents.
