Preparing Your Home for Christmas

Christmas spirit is in the air as Santa prepares himself for his annual trip around the world. The holidays are supposed to be relaxing, but if you are hosting your family party, they can be anything but. Use the tips below from The Maids of Dallas to host a stress-free gathering that your family is sure to remember and enjoy.
  • Deck the halls. Christmas just wouldn't feel the same without lights, a tree, and the stockings hung by the chimney with care. Make sure your family feels the Christmas spirit by decorating your home – inside and out.
  • Cook ahead. Holiday dinners can be as big as Thanksgiving, but that doesn't mean you need to spend your Christmas Day in the kitchen. Vegetables and other sides can easily be cooked a day or two in advance, stored in the refrigerator, and warmed up to serve with the main course.
  • Set the table ahead of time too. Setting the table for your entire family can be time-consuming, which is why it should be done the night before. Getting it out of the way will leave you with one less item on your to-do list and you will be glad you did it when it comes time to serve the food.
  • Make sure you have enough seating. If you have a large family, lack of seating at the dinner table can become an issue. Have an estimate of how many people will be attending your holiday get-together, and make sure you have sufficient seating for everybody. If you don't, consider leasing tables and chairs for the day from a local rental company.
  • Clean. The more cleaning you do before your holiday party, the less you will have to do after. Start at your home's entryway and work from there; making sure to dust, vacuum, and organize everything that needs it. It will leave a good impression on your family and make them feel welcome into your house.

If you don't have the time to clean before your Christmas party, or need a hand after it's over, call The Maids of Dallas at (972) 437-6253. We offer same-day appointments and cleaning options for one room, multiple rooms, or your entire house. For more information, visit our website or like us on Facebook.

Happy holidays!

4 Tips for Streak-Free Glass

Streak-free glass is not impossible to obtain, but it takes more than store-bought cleaner and 30 seconds of your time. To make the windows, mirrors, and glass tables in your home shimmer in the sunlight, use the following tips:

Clean your windows on a cloudy day.
If you are cleaning your home's windows on a bright summer day, the direct rays of the sun will cause the cleaning solution to dry prematurely and leave behind streaks. To prevent this from happening to you, clean on a cloudy day or wash the windows on different sides of your house at different times when the sun is not shining directly on them.

Forget the paper towels.
As mentioned in one of our previous blog articles, paper towels should not be included in your glass-cleaning toolbelt. Wiping glass with a paper towel will leave behind more than just streaks – you'll be looking at a mirror full of lint. Stick to using paper towels to dry your hands; when cleaning glass, you should instead opt for a squeegee or microfiber cloth.

Easily spot streaks.
If you are cleaning a two-sided glass surface, such as a table or window, wipe one side with horizontal strokes and one side with vertical strokes. That way, if you can't seem to get it completely streak-free, you will at least be able to tell which side is dirty to avoid unnecessarily cleaning both sides again.

Make your glass shine.
Streak-free glass is wonderful, but if you want to go the extra mile you can make it sparkle with an extra thirty seconds of work. After wiping the glass surface dry with a microfiber cloth or squeegee, polish it off with a clean chalkboard eraser or piece of newspaper to make it gleam.

Let the Maids of Dallas make the windows in your home sparkle by calling (972) 437-6253 and booking a cleaning. Most house cleaning services don't offer window cleaning, but The Maids is not like most house cleaning services. Key Qualities to Consider When Hiring a Cleaning Service

If you are searching for a home cleaning service, chances are you will have multiple competitors to choose from. When evaluating the different options available to you, it is important to consider more than just their price. To make sure you hire the perfect cleaning service for your home, consider these four qualities in prospective companies.

Reputation
When searching for a cleaning service provider, it is important to consider a company's reputation. If you are deciding between two or more competitors, doing some research on them will likely help make your choice easier. Ask friends and family for recommendations or turn to online services such as Angie's List or the Better Business Bureau directory.

The Maids of Dallas is BBB-accredited with an A+ rating, as well as a two-time winner of the Angie's List Super Service Award.

Personalized Services
Every home has different needs. When hiring a cleaning service, you want a company that listens to these needs and provides you with specialized services, not one that only offers one or two cookie-cutter cleaning packages.

The Maids of Dallas can meet the needs of your family, no matter what they are. We offer one-room, multi-room, and whole-house cleaning as well as daily, weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly scheduled visits.

Availability
When comparing different cleaning services, always ask about their availability to make sure their schedule coincides with yours. No matter how great a company appears to be, you can't hire them if they can't be at your house when you need them to be.

The Maids of Dallas employs a large crew of cleaners to ensure that we can meet your schedule – no matter what it is. We also offer emergency services for those times when a cleaning cannot wait.

Licensing, Bonding & Insurance
If possible, you will want a cleaning service that is licensed, bonded, and insured in their respective state. Companies which are licensed usually provide high-quality work because they have proven to meet a specific set of standards. Insurance will protect you from being financially liable for on-the-job accidents and helps protect from theft. Bonding ensures that they complete the task to your standards.

The Maids of Dallas is a fully licensed and insured company. In addition, we have a 100% satisfaction guarantee – if you are dissatisfied with our services, call us within 24 hours of your most recent cleaning and we will return to clean any areas we may have missed.

5 Bathroom Cleaning Tips

If left uncleaned for only a week or two, bathrooms can become a scary, germ-infested place. Sticking to a regular cleaning routine is essential in keeping your bathroom neat and tidy. Use these 5 tips for a sparkling bathroom the next time you clean:

To get rid of a ring in your toilet bowl...
Cut off a small piece of Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser and drop it in your toilet. Let it sit in the bowl overnight and the ring of grime will be gone by the morning.

To clean your shower head with minimal effort...
Fill a plastic sandwich bag with vinegar and tie it around your shower head with an elastic band, as shown in this picture. Allow to sit for 5-8 hours and your shower head will be as clean as the day you bought it.

To unclog a drain using products you already own...
Pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by ½ cup of white vinegar. Allow the solution to foam up for a few minutes, then pour a cup of hot water down the drain to wash it through. In case you didn't know – vinegar and baking soda can be used to clean a lot of things around the house.

To clean the grout between your bathroom tiles...
Use Resolve carpet cleaner. Just apply it to the dirty grout and let it sit for 15 minutes before scrubbing it with a stiff brush (an old toothbrush works too).

For a streak-free mirror...
Ditch the paper towels; they not only leave behind streaks, but lint too. For a spotless mirror, wipe the Windex off with a microfiber cloth and polish the glass with a 100% cotton t-shirt or piece of crumpled up newspaper.

Bonus Tip: Save the time and energy it takes to clean your bathroom by letting us do it for you! The Maids of Dallas provides single-room cleaning in addition to our whole-house services, and we will still send a team of four specialists to ensure the job is done thoroughly. For more information about The Maids of Dallas, please visit our website or call (972) 437-6253.

Best Natural Cleaners for Your Home

If you take a trip to your local supermarket, they will probably have an entire aisle dedicated to cleaning. Commercial products are manufactured and sold to help clean your floors, tables, sinks, stoves, toilets, and every other surface in your home. What many people don't know is that these shelves full of cleaners can be replaced with a few simple natural ingredients.

  • Baking Soda. Baking soda is one of the most versatile cleaners in the world, and the best part is that it is probably already in your house. It can be used as a non-abrasive cleaning detergent in the kitchen and bathroom or as a deodorizer in the refrigerator and washing machine. Here is an article describing 27 ways to clean with baking soda.
  • Vinegar. Vinegar is another household product which can be used to clean many surfaces in your home. While it can also be used for deodorizing, vinegar really shines (no pun intended) as a stain remover and surface cleaner. Wikihow provides several ways to clean with vinegar in this article.
  • Salt. Salt is great for enhancing the taste of your french fries and margaritas, but it is also a useful cleaning ingredient, especially when combined with other items on this list. For example, when combined with vinegar, salt acts as a catalyst to boost its cleaning power. Its coarse texture also makes it a perfect base ingredient for scrubs and pastes. Here are 37 ways you can clean with salt.
  • Lemon. Lemons are a great natural deodorizer and polisher for metal surfaces. The strong citrus smell of lemon can usually cut through even the toughest of odors – if your garbage disposal reeks to high heaven, drop a lemon peel in it and run it for 30 seconds. Mother Nature Network has put together this great list of 24 other things you can clean with lemons.

If you want a full-home cleaning and value the use of all-natural cleaners, call The Maids of Dallas at (972) 437-6253 for a quote and receive a $50 voucher. We don't send just one maid to your home – we send a team of four to ensure a thorough and speedy cleaning of your entire house. How To Remove Stains From Carpet Using Household Products

No matter how protective you are of your carpet, stains are bound to happen. What do you do? Grab a paper towel and begin frantically rubbing the carpet? Not so fast – rubbing the stain will only spread it and cause it to set faster. For easy and complete removal of stains from your home's carpet, use the following 4-step method:

  1. Immediately, gently blot the stain with a dry towel. Rubbing the stain only spreads it and makes it more difficult to remove later on.
  2. Combine ¼ cup of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of Dawn dish soap, and warm water in a spray bottle. If you don't have these particular items, the white vinegar can be substituted with white wine, and the Dawn can be replaced by any other gentle, non-bleach detergent.
  3. Liberally spray the stain and let soak for 10 minutes. Your carpet should be soaked with the cleaning solution by the time you are done spraying.
  4. After letting the solution sit for 10 minutes, blot the stain with a dry towel until it is removed. If the towel becomes saturated with moisture, use a new one until the stain is completely gone.

This method works for most common household stains including coffee, kool-aid, and pet accidents. If you followed these steps and the stain is still present, call the Maids of Dallas at (972) 437-6253 for a free carpet cleaning quote.
